Mommy Deals

Does anyone else feel like there are all these mommy websites out there offering GREAT deals!! Places like Jump, Chevys, Spas, etc. Well if you aren't aware I thought I would pass along the few I know of. Please share with us any other one's that you know of.

www.mamapedia.com

www.livingsocial.com

www.groupon.com

On these you will need to enter your zip code or city to get deals. If you have family other places tell them about it or enter it yourself so you can get deals for when you visit. Also a tip; I have noticed that Gig harbor isn't usually an option (shocking I know!) and Tacoma usually isn't too. If you choose Seattle, it really picks from everywhere around Seattle (so Tacoma, Gig Harbor, etc).

Hope this helps you save some money.

Spa Day

Just a reminder that this thursday is SPA DAY! Such a relaxing day at MOPS. Here are some reminders:

*Wear comfy clothes and kids come in jammies!
*You will recieve 3 raffle tickets (4 if you turned in your registration form last week), so don't forget to pick those up. There are a lot of great giveaways!
*This will be a laid back morning, so we won't be sitting at a table all morning. Move around, meet some new friends!
*Get your kids to Moppets on time and get to the Gathering Place quickly to sign up for a spa activity, (ONE per mom).
*There will be a lot of other stations to go to at your leisure: nail painting, make your own neck roll, jewelry cleaning and parafin hand waxing.

Can't wait to see you all on Thursday!

First "HELP" post

My Taylor just had his tonsils out yesterday and the first night was rough. Lot's of pain and having to stay on top of it makes for setting the alarm to get up often to keep meds in him.

So today I am really dragging and coffee doesn't always perk me up. So this lead me to my first "HELP" post.. Please comment to help a momma and other momma's out!! Here is the question:

How do you get through the day when you are dragging (tired, sick, grumpy, etc.)?

Food for Thought

On Sunday our pastor talked about the story of David and Goliath (if you are not familiar with this story her is a link online: http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=1Sa&c=17&t=NASB#23)

David was a small man who conquered a GIANT because of his faith in God. The main point of the sermon was what Giant in your life do you need to conquer?

1. How will your faith in God help you do that?
2. What steps are you going to start making to conquer your GIANT?

Don't we all have something!! I know I do.

(If you go to the Chapel Hill website you can download sermon notes)

Rachel Ray tote at Costco

I just picked up the best tote at Costco! For $14.99. It is the Rachel Ray high performance chillout thermal tote (two piece set: Large tote and smaller lunch bag type tote). Stays hot or cold for hours. Perfect for transporting food to MOPS. They claim that there is still ice after two days. I can't wait to use it.

A spin on Eggplant Parmesean

We had some eggplant from our produce delivery (side note: We recieve a box of organic produce delivered to our door every friday. Because they pick from the bountiful crops of the week we can get things that I normally wouldn't buy on a weekly basis. This has been great to increase what my kids will eat and the veggies we may actually buy on our own. Well we had eggplant that I may buy once or twice a year, so I had to come up with something creative.)

I love eggplant parmesean so I found this recipe on www.foodnetwork.com by Mario Batali.

Eggplant Parmesean: Parmigiana di Melanzane

Ingredients
2 pounds (about 2 medium-sized) eggplant
Salt
4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup fresh bread crumbs, seasoned with 1/4 chopped fresh basil leaves and 1/4 cup pecorino
2 cups Basic Tomato Sauce, recipe follows
1 pound ball fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Wash and towel dry the eggplant. Slice the eggplant horizontally about 1/4-inch thick. Place the slices in a large colander, sprinkle with salt and set aside to rest about 30 minutes. Drain and rinse the eggplant and dry on towels.

In a saute pan, heat the extra-virgin olive oil until just smoking. Press the drained eggplant pieces into the seasoned bread crumb mixture and saute until light golden brown on both sides. Repeat with all of the pieces. On a cookie sheet lay out the 4 largest pieces of eggplant. Place 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce over each piece and place a thin slice of mozzarella on top of each. Sprinkle with Parmigiano and top each with the next smallest piece of eggplant, then sauce then mozzarella. Repeat the layering process until all the ingredients have been used, finishing again with the Parmigiano. Place the pan in the oven and bake until the top of each little stack is golden brown and bubbly, about 15 minutes.

Basic Tomato Sauce:
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 Spanish onion, chopped into 1/4-inch dice
4 cloves garlic, peeled and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves, chopped
1/2 medium carrot, finely shredded
2 (28-ounce) cans peeled whole tomatoes
Salt
Sauce:

In a 3-quart saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft and light golden brown, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the thyme and carrot and cook 5 minutes more, until the carrot is quite soft. Add the tomatoes and juice and bring to a boil, stirring often. Lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes until as thick as hot cereal. Season with salt and serve.

This sauce holds 1 week in the refrigerator or up to 6 months in the freezer.

Enjoy!!!

Welcome

Welcome to our MOPS blog site! We are excited to get this up and running and hope you will enjoy visiting too. On here you will find announcements, recipes, mom tips, scripture and meeting topic reviews in case you miss a meeting.

Devotion

"My Face is shining upon you, beaming out Peace that transcends all understanding. You are surrounded by a sea of problems, but you are face to Face with ME, your Peace. As long as you focus on Me, you are safe. If you gaze too long at the myriad problems around you, you wil sink under the weight of your burdens. When you start to sink, simply call out "Help me, Jesus!" and I will ife you up.
The closer you live to Me, the safer you are. Circumstances around you are undulating, and there are treacherous-looking waves in the distance. Fix your eyes on Me, the One who never changes. By the time those waves reach you, they will have shrunk to proportions of My design. I am always beside you, helping you face today's waves. The future is a phantom, seeking to spook you. Laugh at the future! Stay close to me." (From Jesus Calling by Sarah Young)

Scripture: Phillipians 4:7; Matthew 14:30 and Hebrews 12:2

Dr. Tip for Rehydrating sick young ones

I heard this from a friend's Dr. the other day. To keep young kids hydrated after the stomach flu, cut a clean washcloth in 2in. squares and soak in pedialyte, gatorade, water or watered down apple juice. Place in freezer on cookie sheet until frozen solid. Place in baggie and pull out as needed. This kept her 2 yr old happy and busy for 20 min. per square. There is only about a TB in there so it won't be too much on their system, but gets a bit of fluid back in. Plus if they are running a fever the coolness helps too.

January 13th Meeting

This week we had the Executive Director from Tacoma Children's Museum speak at MOPS. She share some great information that I didn't get a chance to write down everything. Please comment some things that you learned below.

Here is what I took away from her talk.
1. Washington is doing a GREAT job at Early Childhood education! Yay us!
2. The Museum will be moving next Jan. to a new facility with better parking and a bigger building
3. It will be free (I am shocked at this so if I am wrong pleae tell me)
4. The most important thing you can do for your children is : LOVE them, TALK to them and PLAY with them.

Playing with my children imaginatively (is that a word, ha!)does not come easy to me. Even being a preschool teacher and nanny in my pre-mommy life. If you are like me or just can't pull yourself away from the messes you see around your house, then I encourage you to sit down for 15-30 min a day and play. I think we will actually be surprised at how easy and fun this can be. Just this week on our "snow" day I played homeschool (on man I have a whole other post for that), my kids loved that I played the teacher. Even today they asked to do it again. Try it and let us all know how it goes. Give yourself Grace too if you can't get to it daily. We are here to encourage and support one another in this gift of Motherhood.
